Data-Driven Valuation of Flood Resilience Investments
Timeline
2026
Description
A team of students led by Duke faculty in engineering, economics, and environmental policy will study how investments in flood protection, such as levees, stormwater systems, and nature-based solutions, affect not only flood risk, but also local property values, tax revenues, and community financial resilience. Students will combine climate, economic, and public finance data to explore how reducing flood risk can reshape local economies and strengthen communities’ ability to invest in the future. The team will build data-driven visualizations and a prototype dashboard to communicate these insights to policymakers and community partners. This project is coordinated by Duke’s RESILE initiative, with engagement from the Nicholas Institute, the Financial Economics Center, and CIRCAD.
