The Rhodes Computational Humanities Center is a collaborative space at the intersection of data analysis, computer science, and humanities. Building on Duke University’s tradition of cross-disciplinary research and education, we foster research initiatives in the humanities and computational sciences. The projects developed at the Computational Humanities Center bring together computational and humanistic approaches to break new ground in long-standing areas of research. Our current and recent collaborations apply images processing and wavelet representation to art historical and conservation projects; harness Natural Language Processing methodologies to the ethics of consumption in pre-modern literature; and use hidden Markov Models to algorithmically compose classical music.

Hannah Jorgensen, 2023 Fellow
In Fall 2022, 15 students enrolled in an English 290 course on “Fanfiction.” The course aim was to contextualize contemporary fan writing in a longer history of intertextual writing, and to bring in quantitative methods to examine digital fanfiction texts.
Rhodes iiD Doctoral Fellowship in the Computation Humanities
This is an opportunity for English doctoral students at Duke University to receive training in the methodology and theory of computational and digital literary studies. The fellowship program will introduce students to both research and pedagogical practices using computational methods. Fellows will also gain an understanding of the quickly-developing critical questions and methodologies that drive scholarship in the digital humanities.
